What you should do today, free
Defenders are usually carved out of state broker-removal statutes — those focus on prosecutors and judges. So the broker opt-out is the protection, and the free scan is the starting map. Pair it with bar-association resources where they exist; some state defender offices have negotiated group-rate privacy programs and you might already be eligible. Once you've checked whether your state defender association already runs one, the association member benefit is what fills the gap.
