Swatting

Mark Herring: fatal swatting over a Twitter handle (Tennessee, 2020)

FILE 001Bethpage, Tennessee2020-04-27
CLOSED

Mark Herring, a 60-year-old Tennessee resident, died of a heart attack during a police response to a false emergency call. The call was retaliation by a group trying to force him to hand over the @Tennessee Twitter handle. One of them posted his home address in a Discord server after he refused to sell.

What reduces this risk

Herring's home address was the pivot point of the extortion. Once Sonderman posted it in the Discord server, placing the false emergency call took little effort. Prosecutors did not say how the group found the address, but public records and people-search listings routinely expose the link between a name and a home. Removing those listings raises the difficulty of the one step an attacker depends on: turning a name into a home address.
